The candidates for the 12th district senate race met for debate at Bogalusa City Hall, Tuesday night, and THE DEAD PELICAN was there! One of the night's more contentious moments was when candidates Mickey Murphy (D) and Beth Mizell (R) asked each another who they had voted for in previous elections.Murphy asked Mizell first. In his signature grave, angry tone Murphy asked "Mrs. Mizell, how can you justify a vote for David Vitter to your children and grandchildren?"
Mrs. Mizell answered calmly that she is a Christian who believes in forgiveness, and that David Vitter has consistently voted to uphold conservative values in the U.S. Senate.
Then it was Mizell's turn. She asked "Mr. Murphy, who did you vote for in the last U.S. Senate race?"
"I voted for the Democrat," he said, insisting that he was not ashamed of it, but his face was visibly irritated. He then changed the subject to John Bel Edwards, talking about how Edwards "lived by the honor code" and is not in the pockets of the big corporations.
Mizell pressed him about his vote for Landrieu.
"I'm not talking about Landrieu," Murphy thundered.
He said that he would support John Bel Edwards for governor, while at the same time claiming to be non- partisan.Murphy appeared defensive about his party status throughout the duration of the debate.
He claimed that his reason for remaining a member of the Democratic party was the fact that he was "raised Catholic and raised Democrat," that he did not want to disappoint his 91-year-old mother.
While Mr. Edwards is currently ahead of Senator Vitter in the Governor's race, Murphy's public support for Mary Landrieu could be more problematic. Mary Landrieu was THE key vote in the passage of Obamacare.
DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE PRESENT
THE DEAD PELICAN's Chad E. Rogers noticed a man in his late twenties wearing a sport jacket sitting directly behind him. At the end of the debate Rogers asked "You wouldn't happen to be a political staffer would you?"
The young man answered in the affirmative.
When asked which candidate he was supporting, the jacketed man said "I'm from the Democratic National Committee."
A video was filmed of the event by Mount Hermon TV and can be viewed here.
